Shocking but true, The road is found in East Africa
Do you know that the most expensive road in the world is in Uganda and it cost $476 million? Of this, US$350 million is a loan from the Exim Bank of China at 2 percent annual interest. The remaining US$126 million was provided by the Government of Uganda.
When you hear about the most expensive road in the world, one would likely be looking at Europe, Asia or America, but that’s not the case as it is in Africa. Uganda, a landlocked country in East Africa has the most expensive road in the world. The Uganda National Roads Authority (Unra) management paid Shs577b to suspected ghost land claimants
The construction of the highway is costing a whopping U.S.$476 million, with a shocking cost of U.S.$9.2 million per kilometre over and above the average $2 million per kilometre and was constracted by China Communication Construction Company. The Entebbe–Kampala Expressway, also known as the “Kampala–Entebbe Expressway” is a four-lane toll highway in the Central Region of Uganda covering a distance of approximately 37.23 kilometres.
In November 2010, the government of Uganda signed an agreement where the Chinese government, through the Exim Bank of China, would lend up to US$350 million for the construction of the highway, repayable over forty years. The construction began in 2012 and was completed August 2017 but the completion was scheduled for May 2018
Collection of toll fees on the expressway, ranging from US $1.4 to US $5.00, depending on the size of the vehicle, began on 8 January 2022.
